My immediate action is to facilitate a concise triage session with the Development Lead and Product Owner/Analyst to understand the defect's root cause, its exact impact, and the proposed fix.

My strategy to define the minimum testing scope involves:

  1. Understand the Fix & Impact:

    • Root Cause Analysis (RCA): Confirm with Dev what code changes were made (files, modules).
    • Impacted Areas: Identify direct and indirect modules affected by the fix. This forms the core of our targeted testing.
    • Business Criticality: Product defines the severity and priority. Is it revenue-impacting? Data integrity? User blocking? This informs our risk appetite.
  2. Risk-Based Prioritization:

    • Direct Fix Verification: The absolute first priority is to confirm the defect is resolved.
    • Regression on Impacted Areas: Based on the RCA, identify minimal, high-priority regression tests for closely related functionalities. We'd leverage existing test cases that cover these areas.
    • Integration Points: If the fix touches an integration point, a quick sanity check there is crucial.
    • Smoke Test (System Health): A very quick end-to-end smoke test on core critical paths, if time permits, to ensure no obvious major breakage. This checks for unexpected side effects.
  3. Team Coordination & Delegation:

    • Dedicated QA Engineer: Assign one experienced QA Engineer to execute the focused test plan. This prevents context switching and ensures efficiency.
