How do you resolve a disagreement with a Development Lead who classifies a critical bug as "Low Priority" based on their technical estimation of the fix?

Expert Answer:

To bridge this gap, I move the discussion away from subjective negotiation and toward objective risk management. My strategy relies on three pillars:

  • Standardized Severity Matrix: I ensure the team has a pre-agreed document defining Severity (the impact on the system) vs. Priority (the business urgency). Severity is objective; Priority is negotiable based on resources.
  • The "User-Impact" Lens: If a Dev Lead argues for low priority due to complexity, I reframe the conversation around the business cost: "What is the revenue loss or customer churn rate if we ship with this?"
  • Evidence-Based Mediation: I utilize data—such as production logs, customer support ticket volume, or user session recordings—to illustrate the reality of the issue, effectively removing personal opinion from the equation.
